Live Review: The Family Rain @ Rescue Rooms [24/11/13]

You only need to look as far as Oasis or The Kinks to see that rock bands formed by brothers rarely end well. The Family Rain, playing their first Nottingham headline show last night at the Rescue Rooms, are intent on proving otherwise.

Siblings Will, Ollie and Timothy Walter open the gig with a frantic rendition of Carnival – a fuzzy example of garage rock at its purest. Revelling in the venue’s intimacy, frontman Will playfully urges the audience to rush to the front and “forget about work on Monday.”

Although comfortable in their confined surroundings, the group’s style and sound is destined for a far greater setting. This is most noticeable when showcasing a heavier, intense side. The brooding Reason To Die, brought to a rollicking climax by guitarist Ollie, possesses a bite worthy of an arena.

The band, best described as a love child of Kasabian and The Black Keys, use the show to preview tracks from their upcoming debut album, Under The Volcano. “Brand spanking new” Don’t Waste Your Time On Me is a gnarly beast of a rock song – amplified further by Will’s raspy, fierce vocals.

Avoiding the usual formalities of an encore, the brothers tear through the set’s finale, closing with bluesy fan favourite, Trust Me…I’m A Genius.

Although undeniably talented individually, the band’s real allure shines when they come together. Whether through vocal harmonies or blistering impromptu jams, a deep understanding between the siblings is evident in everything they do.

Maybe it is best to keep it in the family.
